The systema training regimen seems very valid with some interesting Qi Gong, some of which is definitely a borrowing from some Oriental styles, other probably a synthesis developed in the Soviet Union, or modern Russia. Some of it was new to me personally, such as "rolling like a log" while neutralizing the attack at the same time. I think its an interesting ground technique. Some of it I suppose are Universal principles as I have encountered them elsewhere. The instructor seems to be a savvy intelligent individual who urges his trainees to completely relax, and as you know, that idea shouldn't be underestimated for those of us who train.
All in all, this is a schematic combat approach, directed at teaching one quickly, so they could engage. That is a good thing if you don't have the time or the patience to spend on studying an exotic eastern method which you may not even understand properly. So....try it:)
